Overview

The Regulatory Compliance for Water and Wastewater Systems course covers US Federal, State, regional and local standards for regulatory compliance associated with drinking water and wastewater systems. The course will include overviews of EPA water regulations and standards, including not only those directly related to drinking water and wastewater quality, but also related areas such as treatment, chemical storage, land use, risk mitigation and infrastructure construction.

Operations, engineering, water quality and compliance and management staff who work for, oversee, or provide consulting services to utilities should attend this course. Attendees are assumed to be generally familiar with drinking water and wastewater terms. Attendees will learn about the federal regulatory determination process, environmental regulations governing utilities, compliance challenges and assistance resources, and regulatory changes and trends expected over the next several years.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, attendees will:

  • Review the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act and their amendments, and how they are amended, administered and enforced
  • Discuss how States might enact regulations more stringent than the federal regulations
  • Gain a general understanding of other environmental regulations that may be applicable to drinking water and wastewater facilities
  • Discuss new and pending regulations and how the regulatory climate has evolved in recent years
  • Review a number of compliance assistance resources and strategies to achieve and maintain compliance

Angela G. Walker, Pretreatment Compliance Coordinator, Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water & Sewer Commission

Angela Walker has over 25 years of experience in wastewater treatment, and she has been the Wastewater Pretreatment Compliance Coordinator at Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water & Sewer Commission since 2014. Currently, Angela monitors industrial dischargers, and she enforces the FOG (fats, oils, and grease) program. She also ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations.

Prior to joining Brunswick-Glynn Joint Water & Sewer Commission, Angela’s experience included time as a wastewater treatment plant operator, lab analyst, supervisor of wastewater facilities, and superintendent of wastewater facilities.

Ms. Walker is also the owner of an environmental consulting practice (Angela G Walker LLC), and she is the Vice President of the Southeastern FOG Alliance. These opportunities allow Angela to bring new legislation to the state of Florida on the disposal of some waste streams from food service establishments, implement new methods and strategies for operating biodiesel plants suing brown grease as feedstock, and train the next generation of water environmental inspectors.

Angela currently holds a State of Georgia Class 1 Wastewater Operator License, State of South Carolina Physical/Chemical Wastewater License Level A, a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and a juris master’s in international law.
